Concept:
Groundwork Yorkshire were contacted by Leeds City Council Highways department to look at traffic calming measures in the Victoria Park and Wortley area of Leeds. The brief was to close off existing rat runs and transform them into safe, attractive, active travel corridors for pedestrians and cyclists incorporating urban greening and sustainable urban drainage solutions.
There were 7 locations in total and the brief was to make the areas attractive and exciting and incorporate sustainable urban drainage, rather than the usual mundane calming measures.
The seven locations within the Victoria Park and Wortley area were Victoria Park Grove, Victoria Park Avenue, Kirkstall Mount and Lancastre Avenue. Those in Wortley are on Ryedale Avenue and Dragon Road.
The designs incorporate a series of rain gardens, taking advantage of the steep gradients of the highway. New high quality paving complements the scheme with attractive planting, seating and other features and bespoke artwork whilst restricting motorised vehicles.
A funding package has now been assembled and works are about to commence onsite
