Concept:
The site was a previously overgrown, unsafe and uninviting former botanical garden that was the focus for a large amount of anti social behaviour.
The concept was to create a series of relaxing rooms with differing planting styles, colours and feature trees. Laser cut, corten steel moongates by Artist Chris Campbell mark the start of each space, reflecting the style of planting and the paving changes underfoot as you pass through. The gates are on the themes of falling acer leaves to match the Japanese Maple feature tree, Seed heads which will reflect the perennial planting within this central area and finally ferns and fronds which marks the entrance to the meditation space at the rear of the garden whose planting is more foliage based as it has the most tree cover. Swathes of bluebells and snowdrops are planted around the garden.
A large number of poor quality trees were removed and understorey cleared to open up views through the space. Two new entrances/exits onto the adjacent field were created to open it up to the wider park. This has all contributed to the creation of a light, bright accessible resting place.
