Concept
River restoration isn’t just about making a landscape look beautiful; it refers to a complex variety of ecological, physical, spatial, and management practices. These measures are designed to restore the natural functioning of a river system—ultimately supporting biodiversity, recreation, flood management, and resilient landscape development.
The Challenge in Yorkshire’s Landscapes
Yorkshire’s hilly terrain naturally creates fast-flowing becks and rivers that are highly prone to sudden flooding during heavy rainfall, particularly in urban environments.
As dynamic systems, these watercourses hold incredible potential for diverse wildlife habitats. However, over generations, many of our valleys have been artificially straightened, cleared of natural vegetation, and altered to move water as quickly as possible for land drainage. Combined with rising urban development and rapid water run-off, many of our region’s becks have become degraded by pollution and excessive flow speeds.
Our Approach: Designing with Ecological Processes
At Groundwork Yorkshire, we design and develop a wide range of riparian landscapes—from urban drains in Hull to ecological lakes and rural becks. We specialize in using natural, ecological processes to return habitats to woodlands and watercourses while strategically “slowing the flow” of surface run-off.
By manipulating contours, introducing native planting, and carefully managing public access, we interrupt ecological decline and give nature a chance to heal. Some of our key interventions across Yorkshire include:
- Slowing the Flow: Installing leaky dams and woody, branched bundles on slopes to capture rapid run-off.
- Re-engineering Watercourses: Re-meandering straightened rivers and adding riffles, pools, and bars to oxygenate the water.
- Water Quality & Filtration: Excavating detention basins, wetlands, and scrapes to attenuate peak rainfall, allowing natural filtration and sedimentation to clean the water.
